Family Law

Divorces – The decision to divorce from your spouse is not an easy one. Divorce can create both emotional and financial hardships. Questions need answers and the right direction from the beginning is crucial to success. Child custody, child support, visitation, and property division are all issues which need experienced help. We are here to help you through that process.

Custody – Child custody disputes can be very difficult for the parents and especially for the children involved. Your child’s interests are our primary focus inside and outside of the courtroom. I can help you understand the differences in legal custody and joint custody.

Child Support – I can assist you with the proper calculation of child support if applicable to your case. Specific guidelines by the state govern child support calculations.

Adoptions – Most, if not all adoptions are joyous occasions, but can be complicated without experienced legal counsel. I have handled hundreds of adoptions over North Alabama and would be happy to speak with you to answer your questions and assist you with your adoption case.

Probate Law

Wills and Estates – If you or your family member dies with a will that has been properly drafted and executed that will should be probated through the probate court. If you or your family member dies without a will, their estate should be administered in the probate court. Our office handles both types of estates which can be complicated and confusing for the individual. Our office offers professional handling of these cases to assure that the decedent's wishes are carried out and that the heirs receive their inheritance according to the probate laws of Alabama.

Living Wills – A living will declares an individuals desires with regard to medical decisions in the event that individual becomes unable to express their decisions to a medical provider. A proxy of your choice can be designated to make the medical decisions on your behalf. This ensures your final wishes are documented should something unfortunate happen. Living wills are also known as advanced medical directives.

Powers of Attorney – At Kimberly A Norris Law, we do more than just draft wills. We prepare trusts, powers of attorney, advanced medical directives, and more. You can grant the power to handle your financial affairs to someone you trust through a power of attorney, which can be invaluable should you become unable to handle your financial affairs yourself.

Guardianship/Conservatorship – If you take guardianship of another person, they become your ward, and you assume complete custodial control over that person. This includes making decisions such as living arrangements, and some medical decisions for that person. Those in need of guardianship can include the elderly, who can no longer take care of themselves. This also includes children, in some situations.

A conservatorship is when a person (the conservator) takes responsibility for another individual's financial affairs. This can be done as a result of physical or mental disabilities.
